Løkken
Løkken is a former fishing village, but the locals now mostly live off tourism. The village is very cozy, with a lot of nice shops. Especially the candy shop is worth a visit, because they demonstrate how they make their sweets and candy canes by hand.
The coast of Denmark nearby Løkken erodes by approximately 0.5m a year. Løkken is protected by a breakwater, but people in the surrounding villages can calculate how long it takes before the sea reaches and takes their homes.
There are a number of bunkers at Løkken, which can be found on the beach. These bunkers were built in the dunes during WWII, but are now disappearing into the sea.

Norre Lyngby
In the north of Løkken lies the small village Norre Lyngby. This village is not protected by a breakwater, as is the case in Løkken. It is clear that several houses are threatened by the sea. It's nice to make a walk over the beach and see how the houses are threatened by the sea.

Rubjerg Knude Fyr
Rubjerg Knude Fyr is a lighthouse on top of the cliff dune of Lønstrup Klint. This dune has developed, because there is a lot of sand available, which is blown to the coast by the wind. The strenght of the wind is amplified by the coastal cliff , therefore the sand can be blown extra high and the dune rises up to 60m above sea level.
The lighthouse was built in 1899. Until 1968 was used as a lighthouse. Until 2002 there was a museum, a restaurant and a large car park at the lighthouse. However, these buildings are now demolished because they were threatened by the sea. The expectation is that the lighthouse will stand on top of the dune until the end of 2016. After 2016 it will be devoured by the sea. So if you want to see the lighthouse on the immense dunes, you have to be quick and pay a visit to Rubjerg Knude Fyr!

Råbjerg Mile
Råbjerg Mile is the largest free walking parabolic dune in Northern Europe . It has an area of about 1 squared km and a height of 40m . The dune contains 4 million kubes of sand and moves at a speed of about 18m per year in north-easterly direction .
The legs of the dunes are lower, so the groundwater is higher and plants can grow on those legs. However, the top of the dune is higher and therefore has low groundwater levels. Plants can not reach the water and therefore is the top of the dune not covered with vegetation. The wind has free play and this part of the dune moves more quickly than his legs . This effect creates the typical parabolic shape of the dune.
Today this dune is one of the few free-moving sand dunes in Europe .In the 16th and 17th centurie was the presence of walking dunes a major problem. Many villages were threatened to become sand-buried by the sand dunes, over and over again. It was in the 17th centure that the people were allowed to plant trees on the sand dunes and so was the problem of the walking dunes almost completely solved .

Den Tilsandede Kirke (The sand-buried church)
you can only visit the tower of a former 13th-century church, which is sand-buried by a walking dune. The walking dune Råbjerg Milen has threatened the church for centuries. A forest was planted to capture the dune. The walking of the dune was almost accomplished, but the forest could not prevent that sand hunted the then St. Laurentius Church and stove it over and over again. The congregation had to dig to the church every Sunday to come in, until it was in 1775 that it was decided to demolish the church and give the tower price to the dune. Nowadays is only the white tower visible, but the entire village around the tower has disappeared under the dune.

The head of Jutland
Grenen, the area at the head of Jutland is growing towards the north. Sand is delivered by the erosion of large stretches of coast southwards . That sand is carried along the coast by the currents to the Northernmost tip of Denmark. Here the currents of the Kattegat and Skagerrak meet at the northernmost tip, therefore the sand stays behind and the country grows towards the north.
The head of Jutland lies several kilometers above the large harbor of Skagen. It is worth a visit because you can sea both the northernmost tip of Denmark and you can stand with two feet in two different seas
